Passing the break.

There's no respite
as a parent.

Someone can tell you
on the matter
of parenting; that
there's a break to be had.
They might say
'go to work, there's a break for you'.
Or.
'The ride on the train - or a drive alone, there's a break!'
But really.
For some
you pass the break
your mind will wander back
to those small hands.
Are they eating?
Are they warm?
She likes her sandwich cut in to quarters
and to wear her pajamas twice.
Don't forget they need to go to the dentist in a week
and the little is due for a well kid exam.
And you may try
those little things you think about
to put them aside.
But for some it never really
stops.
There is no
passing the break without
the thoughts of your smalls.
Or your spouse.
Is he safe?
are they doing the things you asked?
are you guys ok? it seems worrying lately
but ever you go.
Sometimes you have to go without them.
You might blast the radio
enjoying the feel of the sun on your
face
in this brief summer.
And then you realise
how she'd enjoy this feeling too
the warmth of the sun on her skin
a breeze through her hair
'play it again momma!' she might
say
excited to hear it again.
Delighting in the musics you share.
There is no break
not truly,
for some.
